VINTAGE KOSTA CRYSTAL ICE BUCKET BY VICKE LINDSTRAND WITH AIR BUBBLE IN BASE. This bucket was given to me as a gift in the early 1970's to compliment my sets of Tapio Wirkkala Iittala glasses. The Tapio glasses also have an air bubble designed in the stem of each glass, but the Tapio designed air bubble is created with an opening on the bottom of the stem. The Lindstand Kosta Ice Bucket air bubble is completely enclosed in the heavy crystal base with no opening. This gives the illusion of a bubble of air floating in space and time. The Tapio Wirkkala bubble in each glass was supposed to remind any person who was drinking from the glass to savor the moment and even perhaps to enjoy each sip of liquid down to the last drop. Certainly a design philosophy worth passing on here. Though not manufactured by Iittala, this classic Kosta Crystal Ice Bucket features a simple yet elegant chrome handle that attaches via two holes that have been drilled into the crystal at the top of the bucket. There are two transparent plastic gaskets that fit over the ends of the two metal pins which in turn fit into the drilled holes. These gaskets were part of the design and are intended to help keep the crystal safe. F.Y.I. - With care, the handle and the two clear plastic gaskets can be detached from the Crystal Ice Bucket when you want to polish the Chrome. This Bucket measures 5 inches in diameter by 5 1/8 inches tall. The Ice Bucket I am offering for sale has rarely been used over the last forty years and remains in excellent condition. The design is minimalist and very modern. This Lindstrand designed piece is from the post World War II golden age of Scandinavian Glass design that's now becoming highly collectible. It's my understanding that Iittala did not offer a complimentary Crystal Ice Bucket to match their Tapio glasses and so the design by Vicke Lindstrand produced by Kosta was the closest match available and remains so. Even without owning the Iittala glasses, (which are offered for sale on this site) the Kosta - Vicke Lindstrand designed Ice Bucket remains one of the most beautifully designed pieces of modern Swedish Crystal.
